Moving to Costa Rica with children naturally raises one of the biggest questions for families:What about school? Here in the Cahuita area, we are incredibly lucky to have a beautiful mix of public and private options — and for our family, the choice became very clear once we discovered Centro Educativo Complementaria Cahuita.
This article is meant to give you a clear picture of what schooling looks like here, what we personally experienced, and what future MiraVida families can expect.
🌟 Centro Educativo Complementaria Cahuita — A Wonderful Private School Close to Home
Our children attend Centro Educativo Complementaria (CEC), a private bilingual school located right here in Cahuita.CEC follows a holistic, child-centered educational approach with a strong focus on:
emotional development
creativity and free expression
bilingual learning (Spanish & English)
small groups and personalized support
nature-connected and project-based education
They combine traditional subjects with hands-on activities, outdoor learning, arts, and real-life skills. The school is officially registered with the Costa Rican Ministry of Education (MEP), follows national guidelines, but enriches the curriculum with additional bilingual and creative programs.
For us, it has been a perfect balance of structure, warmth, and freedom.

💛 Our Experience — Why We Love This School
The atmosphere at CEC is kind, calm, and very supportive.Even though our children arrived with limited Spanish, they were welcomed with open arms — and the teachers know exactly how to gently integrate newcomers.
Our son, after only one year, already understands almost everything in Spanish and is starting to speak more and more. We were amazed at how quickly children adapt in the right environment.
We also appreciate that the school communicates well with parents, organizes beautiful activities, and creates a truly family-oriented environment.
💸 Costs — Surprisingly Affordable for a Private School
Compared to other private schools in Costa Rica (especially around the Central Valley or tourist hotspots), Complementaria is refreshingly affordable.
We currently pay around:
≈ €300 per month (tuition)
plus enrollment and occasional additional costs (materials, activities)
This makes CEC one of the more accessible private school options in the Caribbean region — without compromising quality.
🚗 Distance — Only 20 Minutes from Finca MiraVida
From our finca, the school is roughly 20 minutes by car, a very easy and pleasant drive.
One of the advantages of building a connected neighborhood is that families can coordinate school transportation together:carpooling, shared rides, alternating drop-off schedules — reducing costs and making mornings easier for everyone.
This is exactly the kind of support system we envision at Finca MiraVida.
🎒 Public School Option – Only 10 Minutes Away
There is also a local public school just 10 minutes from the finca. It has a good reputation, friendly staff, and is completely free.
However, public schools are:
100% Spanish-speaking
less able to support very shy or non-Spanish-speaking children in the beginning
more crowded
more traditional in structure
Some children adapt extremely fast and thrive there — especially because full immersion accelerates language learning. For more sensitive kids, however, the private option can offer a gentler transition.
Both paths are valid and beautiful — it depends on the personality of each child.
📚 Homeschooling and Alternative Education in Costa Rica
Costa Rica technically requires children to be enrolled in either:
a recognized local school (public or private), or
an international accredited homeschooling program (e.g. Wolsey Hall Oxford, US online schools, Finnish or Canadian programs)
You can homeschool, but it must be through an accredited foreign curriculum for it to be officially valid. Many expat families do this, especially those creating alternative education projects.
Our dream for the future — long term — is to one day create a small nature-inspired learning space inside the neighborhood. But for now, Centro Educativo Complementaria is a wonderful option.
🌱 Why Education Here Feels Meaningful
What we love most about schooling in this area is that education does not end in the classroom.
Children here learn:
from nature
from animals
from each other
from daily life in the jungle
from freedom and responsibility
It’s a different rhythm — slower, healthier, and closer to what childhood should feel like.
🌴 Final Thoughts
Whether you choose the private school in Cahuita, the nearby public school, or a homeschooling program, you have beautiful options in this region. For us, Centro Educativo Complementaria has been a blessing — a place where our children feel safe, seen, and inspired.
And as our neighborhood grows, so will the opportunities to support each other with:
shared school transport
learning groups
after-school activities
language support
community projects
At Finca MiraVida, we truly believe that it takes a village to raise a child — and we are building that village together.
